Nicola worked with our son for a long length of time as a specialist teacher. Advising the schools and giving our son and us as a family support. She was always professional, calm and very knowledgeable about the best way to help our child. She always spoke to our son in a way that helped him understand how to cope with the world around him. She went beyond and above her role as a specialist teacher. She was always at the end of a phone when we as parents or the school needed a bit of advice. She attended meetings with us supporting our battles with the school about the best way forward to for our child. In short, our child wouldn’t have stayed in mainstream for as long as he did without her support and her amazing knowledge of the autistic child. I would without doubt recommend her as an expert on autism and she is one of the most supportive people we know who got us through some extremely tough time’s, always calm and always had a smile, many thanks for all your support.
Nicola Durrant is an amazing person. When Nicola came into our SEN world life became easier from day one. Nicola worked with us for many years and during this time she never faltered in her professional attitude while holding a high level of integrity. My children were always relaxed and happy when working with Nicola. For us as parents Nicola was so friendly and approachable. I will always be grateful to this wonderful lady, without her we would not have a compete full understanding of our child's SEN needs, both emotional and educational. With this knowledge and empowerment our children now have every chance to reach their full potential in all areas of their lives
Well what can I say about Nicola. She is without doubt an absolute godsend and I just don’t know where our family would be now if we hadn’t have had so much support from Nicola. She has been there for our family in the darkest of times, on the end of a phone, always offering support and understanding every step of the way. Nicola completely gets the child and I mean really gets it, she seems to have this ability to work out the child’s needs and personality all together which in turn enables her to look at the whole picture of the child’s needs. Nicola will think out of the box which most professionals will not do and its that extra bit of different thinking that makes her unique to the way she approaches the situation. She will work her hardest to un-pick what is going on and find a solution and then work damn hard to make it work. A very special lady indeed!
Nicola has been a fantastic ASD Specialist Teacher for our school. She has been a tremendous support and made a real difference to the progress and wellbeing of many Special Need pupils at our school. Nicola always goes that extra mile in working with pupils, staff and parents/carers and is professional at all times. Nicola is a joy to work with and her expert knowledge in regard to SEN has been invaluable.
As an Essex school we have greatly benefitted from the advice and support offered by Nicola through her role as a Specialist Teacher for Autism during her time working for the Essex specialist teacher team. Nicola has supported a range of our families and pupils by attending One Planning meetings and Annual Reviews, carrying out observations as part of school visits and writing advice reports to help us improve our provision for key pupils. Nicola has also led parent workshops to enable families to understand the kind of strategies that can really help at home as well as at school. Nicola has also supported some of our families by attending specialist appointments with them, and she has liaised with other professionals to ensure that her insight and specialism can be shared to best advantage and our parents have been very appreciative of this support. Our staff have also benefitted as Nicola has carried out training for them regarding autism and social communication, as well as having delivered training to our local schools cluster which included practical ideas to improve things for our pupils with autism.
We have no hesitation in recommending Ms Durrant in the field of specialist teacher. Nicola understands very well that not all children's needs are the same and she has demonstrated so much expertise to us in the field of understanding the needs of children with special needs. We have come across many people in the education sector who truly believe they understand how a special needs child should be treated, but few actually 'get it' like Nicola. She has helped us, along with many other families and professionals to identify children with hidden SEN. Nicola has also shared valuable knowledge and insights on which types of provision work for those children's needs. She will make a great asset to any SEN team.
Nicola is friendly, helpful and cares deeply about the children she helps. My son was diagnosed with asd last year and her support and advice has been invaluable. She has advised my son's teachers on how best to support him and meet his needs in the classroom, from which we are seeing positive improvements and provided help with our son's ehcp application which was successful. Nicola has also attended meetings with us to support our case in getting help from other relevant professionals. I would definitely recommend Nicola to any parents who have a child with SEN and who want the specialist help and knowledge that she can provide.
I have known Nicola for many years in her capacity of a specialist teacher and while I have been the Special Educational Co-ordinator at William Read; approximately 8 years. During this time she has always had the pupil's best interest at heart. She has developed a wealth of expertise which she is willing to share with professional, parents and the children in order to support their learning and develop other skills they need throughout their school lives. She always makes the children feel important and their opinions, thoughts and wishes are valued. She is very approachable and makes the children she works with feel at ease.
